Informal Thematic Session on the Global Compact for Migration

Time: 22-23 May
Location: UN Headquarters in New York

Within the UN Global Compacts framework, Member and Observer States, as well as key stakeholders will be participating on a series of informal thematic consultation sessions with UN co-facilitators leading the global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration.

The second Informal Thematic Session will take place on 22-23 May at the UN Headquarters in New York. The meeting will be focusing on “Addressing drivers of migration, including adverse effects of climate change, natural disasters and human-made crisis, through protection and assistance, sustainable development, poverty eradication, conflict prevention and resolution”.

Ms. Roula Hamati from INSAN, member organisation of the Destination Unknown campaign, will speak on the second panel under the theme “Human-made crises as drivers of migration”. The panel will focus on examining and identifying policy strategies on prevention of human-made crises, for example, through preventive diplomacy, conflict preventions, resolution, joint humanitarian-development and peacebuilding efforts.

The two-days meeting will also enable participants to engage on interactive discussions on how to build peaceful and secure environments in communities of origin, transit and destination. It will be a significant opportunity to discuss gaps in policy and implementation, and to identify priorities for action and key strategic efforts for inclusive and peaceful societies.
