Myanmar, 21-23 March 2014 – The largest ever gathering of ASEAN Civil Society Conference and ASEAN peoples’ Forum (ACSC/APF), since its inception in 2005, took place. The conference produced a final statement which includes the issue and recommendation on children on the move.
This statement would be an instrument for us to continue our campaign to protect the rights of children on the move. An important achievement in the direction we all stimulate within the DU Campaign of aligning our messages at different levels.
Extremely valuable to see that the concern for children on the move are increasingly on global, regional and national agendas. States have to translate into action the commitments outlined in the recommendations of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, in the Declaration of the 2013 High Level Dialogue on Migration and Development and in national and regional statements such as the ASEAN People’s Forum. More than ever this shows the relevance of campaigns such as “Destination Unknown” where the united efforts of civil society organisations make states accountable and support the translation of these commitments into action.
Congratulations to all who contributed and in particular to the Myanmar and Thai organisations who lobbied actively. A moment to pause and rejoice before heading to the next step of a long voyage for the rights of children on the move where tenacity is rewarded.
